Welcome

Thank you for visiting my website. My hobby has always been History: initially World History, but then more specifically European with particular emphasis on the Czech- Moravian-Silesian Region and its neighbouring countries. All my studies and the information I have acquired has helped me now in my work in genealogy, the science that uncovers our roots. From some very formal looking and sterile parish records, we can discover where we originally came from, who were our ancestors, how many children they had, how many of those survived and who they married. I found out that my ancestor, Joannes Fredericus Ebert, was originally a furrier from Kadaň who applied to be a town burgess in Unhošť in Bohemia in 1708. His descendants continued in that profession for several generations and with my Great Grandfather moved to Prague. He however was a gunsmith and this job took him to the famous castle of Hluboká and Vltavou, the country home of the Princes Schwarzenberg, where the next generations including myself were born. The communist era of course put a stop to such life styles and my father found work in the coal mines of Kladno, where he met a local girl, my mother, herself the daughter of a Sudeten German family. I have lived now in a small village near Kladno for nearly 50 years. Until quite recently my professional work gave me the opportunity to travel all over Europe and this provided me with useful insights and contacts. My interest in genealogy and my confidence in several languages have led to requests for help from all over the world and my hobby has now become my full time activity. When you start to discover your roots, the results can be amazing. Jan Ebert
